My Thoughts on The Woman King (Spoiler Free)

I'm on the subway, heading home after seeing the Woman King at the movie theater, and I enjoyed it. The Woman King is a 2022 American historical epic film about the Agojie, the all-female warrior unit that protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey during the 17th to 19th centuries. Set in the 1820s, the film stars Viola Davis as a general who trains the next generation of warriors to fight their enemies( Wikipedia). It's funny 'cause when I saw the promo trailer, I laughed at Viola Davis's West African accent and was confused by a woman that age playing the part; why is she doing an action movie? My ageism showed up loudly; I wondered why they chose her other than being the biggest dark skin woman movie star right now. Also, a lot of media can all of a sudden find a dark skin person when the story centers on enslavement but can't find us for other stories. I didn't trust it.
